Why platforms verify sellers: the five items of Article 30 of the EU DSA

What the provision requires

The platform must ensure that traders can only use it to promote messages or offer products or services to EU consumers if they have provided the five items beforehand. DSA Art. 30 Abs. 1

The platform must make reasonable efforts, using public databases or by requesting supporting documents from reliable sources, to assess whether the information is reliable and complete. Traders are liable for its accuracy. DSA Art. 30 Abs. 2

What happens if the data is inaccurate

If the platform has reason to believe an item is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date, it requests correction; if you fail to correct, it must swiftly suspend its service to you for offering to EU consumers until the request is fully complied with. DSA Art. 30 Abs. 3

If you are refused or suspended you have the right to lodge a complaint under the mechanisms of Articles 20 and 21 DSA. DSA Art. 30 Abs. 4

What you can prepare

  1. Company name, address and registration code from the business licence, identical to Seller Central.
  2. The legal representative's ID and the payment account in the company's name.
  3. A working phone and email the platform can reach during verification.

Inconsistent names and addresses are a common snag in verification. That is a practical observation, not statute text.

What sellers also ask

Is this Amazon's rule or EU law?

It is the EU regulation's requirement of online platforms; how the platform implements it in its back end is its own design. DSA Art. 30 Abs. 1

What if my data changes?

When data is out of date the platform asks you to correct it and suspends you if you do not. Update promptly after any change. DSA Art. 30 Abs. 3
